Since its publication in 2002, the "New Practical Chinese Textbook" has been well-received by teachers and learners alike. Liu Xun is a professor at the School of Humanities, Beijing Language and Culture University, and the chief editor of Chinese textbooks at Beijing Language and Culture University Press. He is also a member of the advisory committee of the National Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) Committee. He has served as a member of the Academic Research Expert Consultation Group for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language at Hanban, chairman of the Foreign Chinese Language Discipline Group of the Beijing Municipal Higher Education Teacher Position Review Committee, Chinese teaching consultant at the New York State Department of Education, and director of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching.His main research areas include the theoretical foundations of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, second language teaching theory, textbook writing theory, and teacher training. His major publications include "An Exploration of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language", "Introduction to Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language", "Introduction to Teaching Chinese as a Second Language", and "Introduction to Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language". He has led the writing of textbooks such as "Practical Chinese Textbook", "Children's Chinese", and "One Hundred Conversational Chinese Lessons". He was also responsible for developing China's first set of Chinese proficiency test questions and has been awarded the government special allowance by the State Council.
